5 Holistic Helpers to Stop Spring Sickness In Its Tracks

Hello Darlings!

Spring fever is not just a term to describe cabin-fevered co-eds’ enthusiasm after winter’s chill breaks. With the coming of spring, there are a number of factors that can affect your health and lead to the dreaded spring cough or spring fever in a very different sense of the word. Temperature fluctuations, rising pollen counts, and changes in everyday routines are a potent combination that can produce disastrous results. However, there are healthy, holistic ways to combat spring sickness at its onset, the very first tickle in your throat or the sneaky first sniffle.

1. Inner Defense Capsules. These capsules contain a combination of essential oils known as Thieves, named for the blend that grave robbers during the Black Plague used to keep themselves safe from the disease. Thieves contains cloves, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon, rosemary, and thyme among others. All of these help to boost your immune system and combat bacteria. Also, the taste is reminiscent of apple pie, a bit better than the normally chalky taste of pills!

2. Echinacea. Echinacea is an herbal remedy derived from the purple coneflower that helps to boost your immune system. An anti-infection agent, echinacea is great for preventing viruses and available in a number of different forms. In college I used to use echinacea lollipops!

3. Sambucol. Sambucol is a syrup of black elderberry extract. The Sambucol website says it best: “Flavonoids are powerful, natural antioxidants that are thought to work to protect the body’s cells from the potential damage caused by free radicals. Certain flavonoids – anthocyanins – are found primarily in the pigments of dark blue and deep purple fruits such as the black elderberry. It is these that have a remarkable ability to stimulate the body’s immune system.“ My family swears by Sambucol, we’ve gone through at least four bottles this harsh winter!

4. Local Honey. Any way you look at them allergies are awful. Stuffy noses, persistent coughs, they really are a pain. Many spring allergies are in reaction to the plethora of blooming plants and the floating pollen they produce. Local honey, emphasis on local, contains traces of this pollen native to your area. Taking a daily spoonful of honey in the months leading up to spring and throughout the season helps get your body used to the pollen in the air, desensitizing yourself from spring pollen’s effects.

5. Lemon Balm. Lemon balm, easily found in tea form, is an anti-bacterial and anti-viral herb. The great tasting herb can often be seen as a garnish to add a fresh flavor and lemon scent to a number of dishes. Adding a cup of lemon balm tea to your daily routine is a great, simple, tasty way to boost your immune system.

I hope that some (or all!) of these supplements help your immune system this spring! Sunny days and new green growth seem to make everyone happy, and you can’t get your spring fix if you’re inside with spring fever!

I forgot to take a picture of Tink for this post so here is a puppy picture!
